Weekend Notes.

  • It’s just like Romeo & Juliet!” — Patron, after watching West Side Story
  • Encountered a real life version of effeminate child from Curb.
  • Said child (about 9 years old) proclaimed he had a headache and asked for aspirin, while rubbing his temples. My immediate thought was whether or not he got it from doing his taxes.
  • Said child watched the movie version of West Side Story prior to attending performance for “inspiration”.

On a sadder note. Found out another woman I worked with died. In all fairness, she was in her late 80s, but she was the sweet lady to the very end. The kind of lady you just wanted to hug.

  • When I started working there at 18, I was antisocially quiet and extremely self deprecating, so when she told me I was pretty, I immediately shot that down. She bluntly told me “Honey, shut up and accept a compliment.” (I now begrudgingly say thank you…)
  • Helen and her husband Homer were high school sweethearts back in Oklahoma, she waited for him even as he was a WWII POW.
  • They have and always will be the very example of what I can only hope I have in a relationship.

Flight 93 National Memorial.  Now that it’s been officially revealed, I can now reveal that Paul Murdoch Architects and the National Park Service picked our office to be the graphic design and signage consultant in building the memorial.

The objective for the representation of the names was to create a design that has the quality of being contemplative and inspirational, and would evoke a timeless tribute to the heroes of United Flight 93.

The font Whitney Semi Bold Small Caps was chosen for its simplicity and the angular detail of select letterforms. The angular detail relates to subtle architectural elements of the Memorial design. Each name is cut into a 30 x 96 inch white marble panel with a horizontal brushed black stainless steel inlay.

One of our clients, Aerovironment, whom we did design work for their EV chargers, is mostly known for their work in developing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Here is their latest project, The Nano Hummingbird.

The Hummingbird is equipped with a small video camera for surveillance and reconnaissance purposes and, for now, operates in the air for up to 11 minutes. It can fly outdoors, or enter a doorway to investigate indoor environments.

The Nano Hummingbird which can fly at 17 km/h (11 mph) and move in three axes of motion. The aircraft can climb and descend vertically; fly sideways left and right; forward and backward; rotate clockwise and anti-clockwise; and hover in mid-air. The artificial hummingbird manoeuvres using its flapping wings for propulsion and attitude control. It has a body shaped like a real hummingbird, a wingspan of 16 centimetres (6.3 inches), and a total flying weight of 19 grams (0.67 ounces)—less than an AA battery. This includes the systems required for flight: batteries, motors, and communications systems; as well as the video camera payload.
